Soho Playhouse, Jan 2009

I chatted with the playwright/actor Mark Sam Rosenthal, outside the theater. He is angry about the destruction of his beloved city, New Orleans, and the inept Federal response. He said that his family has lived in that city for 7 generations. He portrays a gay Blanche DuBois who starts out from the misery of the Superdome through a FEMA trailer to being placed with an evangelical mega-church in Phoenix, Arizona. Blanche is asked to drink a toast to Jesus in grape juice but is convinced that unfermented grape juice is bad for your health. The church finally places Blanche, an English teacher, in job in a Popey's franchise and the misery seems complete.

I don't know what his sexual orientation is but he displayed none of the obviously gay characteristics on the street that his character displayed on the stage. This is obviously just some fine acting.

Bush and "heck of a job" Brown have made the word "heck" into a dirty word. Mission accomplished.
