In case anyone wants to know, Mott Haven is the southern most point of The Bronx. If you wanted to go further south, you would have to swim. You would characterize Mott Haven and Port Morris as being grimy industrial
After having visited last weekend with Mat Rubenstein I decided to revisit and take some more pictures. Since I had not eaten yet, I decided to try out Bruckner Bar. I was very pleasantly surprised. For $9.95 I got a well prepared Eggs Benedict with a savory salad and coffee. This was the same price as I paid for a vastly inferior breakfast at a Perkins Pancake House (Which I previously reported on). The current owners have had the place for two years. Previously it was called The Rail. Past an open, armored fire door, is a second dining room/art gallery, and the bathrooms.
Continuing down, I stopped at the antique shop that Mat and I previously sought out but that was closed on that day. Actually it is not an antique shop at all but an antique book shop. The owner, Ben, said that he has been there for 3 1/2 years (tel 646-496-6178) and that he has books going back to the 15th Century. The shop is actually called Books, Notes & News, 137 Alexander Ave. The aisles are so cramped that it is hard to navigate through them. Perhaps this is why he would not let me take pictures. He said that he has twice as many books in storage out in Long Island and is hoping to relocate to a larger space. He has been asked to host authors reading from their books but as he pointed out, he does not have the space. He has an eye on an empty shop across the street that would allow seating for about 70.
Ben is going to be participating in the Greenwich Village Antiquarian Book Fair that will be taking place Friday, February 20th through Sunday, February 22nd at PS 3, 490 Hudson St, between Christopher and Grove Streets in the Village. Admission on Friday $12, 6 to 9 PM, Sat, Noon to 5 PM, Admission $6, Sunday, Noon to 5 PM, admission $4. Tel 917-680-0603, email: gvabf2009@gmail.com, www.gvabf.org.
