More LES March 2008
Having eaten lunch at my favorite noodle joint on E Broadway, I decided to explore the area just to the east.. After about two blacks the pretty buildings peter out to a vast sea of housing projects built to a style that has been called Stalin Gothic. Sturdy but ugly buildings. In all fairness to the city, they decided to demolish endless blocks of tenements that were an absolute horror to live in. Buildings without air shafts or even windows. Rickety constructions, some built using a single course of bricks, sometimes with the mortar cheapened with an admixture of sawdust. Given the choice, I would rather live in the projects than in those horrible tenements.
