Downtown at night. April 2009

After dropping stuff off with Andrew and Joanna, I decided to walk up Broadway starting at Canal Street. It was Saturday night and the area is called SOHO (for South of Houston). This name is relatively new. I don't think the area had a name prior to the 1970's. Previously the area was a grimy industrial neighborhood with no shopping whatsoever. Artists discovered this area, where huge lofts with high ceilings in the many cast iron buildings could be had very cheaply. It was then a gloomy, poorly lit area. This did not last long and the artists were quickly priced out. Now it is ablaze with lights spilling out from the many shops, cafes and art galleries and it is filled with huge throngs of people. SOHO is one of the delights of living in a great city. In contrast, what does life outside of town have to offer? "Hey, lets pile in the car, wander around the mall and chow down at an Applebees?" I think not.

I was going to continue wandering around SOHO but I got hit by a few raindrops and decided to cut things short and pick up coffee at Porto Rico in The Village and head home
